Rigid couplings can be employed in situations where shafts are precisely positioned without lateral or angular misalignment. For that reason rigid couplings are limited and are generally used in high horsepower applications. Flexible couplings allow some angular and parallel shaft misalignment and can cover a much larger field of applications.
